In Visions: Near & Far Dinah Worman and Heather Foster explore the landscapes of the West through a representational yet imaginative eye, as they capture cattle, water, mountains and canyons of Colorado and New Mexico. The exhibition is complimented with a selection of 40 Contemporary Western artists, and is on view at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt August 29th through September 23rd, 2019.
It is wonderful to see the humor and adoration for cattle in Heather’s work which often invokes compliments and laughter, while Dinah’s work gives cause for the viewer to pause and explore the landscape-turned still life before them. Both artists are seeing their subjects through a new and unusual perspective, from a blade of grass to a bird eye.
Ann Korologos
Heather Foster of Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been working on an impressionistic cattle series for nearly a decade, visiting ranches and dairy farms, and capturing the personality of western livestock. More recently Foster has dived into the exploration of water’s depth, reflection, and the cattails on the shore from unusual perspectives. Foster also depicts the wild landscapes of Colorado, like her series of the Black Canyon near Gunnison. Foster enjoys showing evidence of her thought process, leaving the changes and refinements in drawing and the composition evident on the canvas.
Dinah Worman lives in Taos, New Mexico where she creates representational yet imaginative variations in oil that focus on the human relationship to the landscape, seen from extreme angles, often with a bird’s eye perspective. Instantly recognizable for its clarity, depth, and quality of light, Worman’s work shows the interaction of man and nature in the contemporary “Wild West” of New Mexico and neighboring Colorado. Dinah sees the landscape as one might see an arranged still life, objects in relation to each other, but on a grand scale. This perspective of the landscape and dedication to self is what is to love about Dinah, not to mention her masterful use of oil and pastel to capture the light of the West.
