Ann Korologos Gallery presents Timeless Expressions a group exhibition featuring Lloyd Schermer, Brett Scheifflee, Sabrina Stiles, Terry Gardner, and Sarah Lamb. The exhibition is on view at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, Colorado from June 22 to July 10, 2023.
“This exhibition explores styles from realism to abstraction, mediums from pastel to oil to antique wood type, and each artist considers ways of life that have disappeared or evolved,” shares gallery director, Sue Edmonds. “Lloyd Schermer creates sculpture from colorful metal and wood blocks antiquated from the days of the printing press; Brett Scheifflee captures memories of Colorado in his highly detailed realist landscape paintings; Sabrina Stiles interprets landscapes and light through abstract pastel, and Terry Gardner paints life and lifestyles that prevail through evolving times.”
Terry Gardner is a contemporary painter of the American West. Gardner depicts the hard work of ranchers and farmers, recording both ranch hands and the lands they roam. The artist visits ranches throughout the West, spending time with the ranchers, capturing the mood and nostalgia of this active, yet often forgotten way of life. Gardner strives to paint what is not visible to the eye by suggesting the mystery and intrigue of the past and present through his moody palette and subject matter.
Sarah Lamb is a realist painter trained with a classical eye and extraordinary skill. Lamb paints from life, arranging the items before her in complementary textures. Every one of Lamb’s paintings activates the senses, her work inspires participation from the viewer, whether it be testing their reflection in dusty bottles or leaning in to smell the red ranunculus of Spring picked from her garden.
Brett Scheifflee resides in his home state of New York, returning after living in the Roaring Fork Valley in 2012. More than a decade later, Scheifflee’s highly detailed realist landscape paintings informed by his study of drawing, illustration, and art history have earned him a national reputation. The soft light, simple composition, careful detail, and hyper-realism of Scheifflee’s oil paintings enthrall his collectors.
Lloyd Schermer began his career as a newspaper publisher, surrounded by the very material that would later inspire him. As newspaper presses upgraded, colorful blocks of wood type, many hand-carved, others, a century old, became obsolete. However, not for Schermer. His colorful, “vintage” wood-type blocks speak with nostalgia and meaningful form into sculptures with clever messages of their own.
Sabrina Stiles is a Colorado-based artist with an expressive style that lends itself to her chosen medium of pastel. Primarily a landscape artist, Stiles prefers to work en plein air. The artist draws inspiration from cloudy days that allow for softer light and dreamlike expressions. Her keen observations and reverence for the beauty in fleeting moments are heralded by many collectors.
