Ann Korologos Gallery presents The Joy of Art, a small-works group exhibition celebrating the many ways art brings joy to all: viewers, artists, and collectors alike, including artists’ delight in creating for others. Featured artists include Sabrina Stiles, Andy Taylor, Sean Wallis and Diana Woods. On view at Ann Korologos Gallery from November 29, 2023 to January 3, 2024.
“The Joy of Art is not only an exhibition, but a founding principal of Ann Korologos Gallery,” shares Sue Edmonds, gallery director. “Art is human nature as much as joy is: both are spontaneous expressions of the human experience. This exhibition features small works by all of our artists who believe that big joy can come in small canvases, and these are the moments that express joie de vivre for the creator and the viewer.”
Sabrina Stiles is a Colorado-based pastel artist with a loose style that lends itself to her chosen medium. Primarily a landscape artist, Stiles prefers to work en plein air and draws inspiration from softer light and feminine expression. Her keen observation and reverence for the beauty that surrounds her, are evident in her work. Pastel has held her focus, though she often layers pastels over oil to take advantage of her favorite qualities of both mediums. Of her experimentation and career changes, she explains, “if you want to get anywhere, you have to be fearless.”
Andy Taylor is a Carbondale, CO artist who has been drawing and painting what he describes as “insignificant scenes.” The emotion and interest of these moments is explored in memory, color and abstract form. Taylor’s expressionistic style, characteristic brushwork and bold palette reflect the feeling of a moment. These subjective reactions to reality in the form of shape and color are hallmarks of Taylor’s work.
Sean Wallis is a painter based in Salt Lake City, Utah. As an impressionist, Wallis pays close attention to the relationship between light and color, capturing fleeting moments with the texture of oil paint and a broad, colorful palette. Wallis’ barn series underscores the integration of man and nature while honoring their independent beauty. His work with light, hue, and atmosphere manifests through skillful combinations of colors that vibrate and excite the eye.
Diana Woods is a painter and sculptor living in Western Colorado, inspired by her surroundings on the border of the Colorado National Monument. Originally from Nebraska, the stories and inspiration behind her work stem from her childhood memories spent on the back of a horse and listening to her grandfather’s tall tales of the Wild West with ‘Bruno the Bear’ as the savior. As a result, her work is full of narrative and allegorical imagery, illustrating the parallels between human experience and the natural world.
