Color and Form, Light and Shadow

“Andy Taylor shows us in color and form the immense beauty –not of the iconic landscape – of the feeling evoked by the moments witnessed along the way,” shares Sue Edmonds, gallery director. “Peter Campbell takes us to a dream-like world to observe the abstracted perspective of light and shadow on mountains, skies, and rivers. Changing Course is an invitation to experience the landscape in a new way, as these artists do.”

Peter Campbell

Peter Campbell is a Durango-based painter who started his artistic career as a photographer, studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. The ideas for Campbell’s landscape oil paintings are often sparked by a fleeting glimpse that catches his eye and elicits an intimate and personal reaction to nature. The artist works on location, connecting directly with the landscape to bring, as he says, the outside into a painting, imbuing it with elements that make it alive. The challenge lies in transferring that instant response to canvas.

Campbell’s landscapes are abstracted views of nature, a perspective informed by his photographic background. By limiting his palette and omitting details, Campbell effectively creates an atmosphere, a mood, sometimes a fantasy which is open to each viewer’s interpretation. His oil paintings reveal moments of light: rivers reflecting the colors of twilight, clouds as canvases to catch the dawn, snowy landscapes giving way to spring.

Andy Taylor

Andy Taylor has been drawing and painting scenery within a day’s drive of his studio in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley for more than five decades. Taylor is most drawn to what he describes as “insignificant scenes” often passed by en route to the iconic landmarks of Colorado or Utah. Taylor depicts, in color and form, the feeling of the moments that gives him pause. The artist’s place of exploration is in moments witnessed along the way: roses along the ditch, the edge of an Aspen forest in the arc of a hill, the emersion of sumac or autumn scrub oak from the brambles.

His expressionistic style, characteristic brushwork and bold palette reflect the feeling of a moment. These subjective reactions to reality in the form of shape and color are hallmarks of Taylor’s work. On hand-stretched canvas, Taylor sketches the bones of his paintings, often visible through thinly painted layers of oil to create the mood, texture, and color admired by his loyal collectors. The artist often revisits the same areas to paint, knowing the landscape has changed both in form and through his perception.
