This year marks the 34th anniversary of the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale in Cody, Wyoming. The opening reception took place August 26, with the show remaining open to the public until the live auction on September 25. Two of our gallery artists, Joel Ostlind and Dean Mitchell, are featured in this year’s events, which features more than 108 of the nation’s leading western painters and sculptors.
The Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale is a one of a kind art sale with a Western theme, offering works relating to the land, people and wildlife of the American West. Artists offer a broad range of stylistic interpretations of the West, in oil painting, watercolor, pastel, sculpture, ceramic and mixed media. All works are original art, and the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale benefits the prestigious Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
A self-taught artist, Joel Ostlind was born and raised around Casper, Wyoming. After years of ranch work, he built a studio in Big Horn, Wyoming, and is now an observer of the West, giving his perspective on the region through etching, drawing, and painting. Ostlind was included in John T. Ordeman’s book The American Sporting Print: 20th Century Etchers & Drypointists.
Dean Mitchell is known for his figurative works, landscapes, and still lifes. He is accomplished in watercolors as well as egg temperas, oils, and pastels. Mitchell is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. His art hangs in corporate and museum collections, including the St. Louis Art Museum, Autry National Center, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress. Mitchell has won the Loa Ruth Sprung Award from the National Watercolor Society. In 2014, he won the Premier Platinum Award and the William E. Weiss Purchase Award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale.
