The Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt is proud to present the work of four female artists this June in The Feminine Eye. The female perspective is the focus of this exhibition and features photographers Sandra Lee Kaplan and Kathryn Rabinow, and painters Roseta Santiago and Dinah K. Worman. All artists will be represented by at least 10 new works, providing exhibition visitors with plenty of examples from which to gain insight into individual styles and processes.
“We are extremely proud of the extraordinary talent represented by the Ann Korologos Gallery and this exhibition allows us to bring together four women artists, each with a unique view and diverse approach to their art,” explains Gallery Director Julia Novy. “Each brings focus on a unique element of the Western lifestyle.” The Feminine Eye will open on June 17 and the artists’ reception will be held on Thursday, June 25, from 5 to 7 pm.
Colorado-based photographer Sandra Lee Kaplan began her 40-year career in Hollywood in the film industry. Her career later led her to Paris where she worked for the major fashion houses such as Christian Dior and Oscar de la Renta. In 1996, Kaplan’s journey brought her to the Rocky Mountains where she currently resides in Redstone, Colorado. She has shared her creative gifts, teaching at various schools and art centers. Of her photography, Kaplan says, “I never set out to simply take a photo; creating an image is my mission.” Her photographs featured in this exhibition are based on a series of arresting shots of horses from her recent travels.
As a world traveler, Houston photographer Kathryn Rabinow specializes in capturing ephemeral moments and extraordinary vistas. While she began her career in academia, Dr. Rabinow soon immersed herself in fine art photography, finding beautiful compositions in unexpected places. Many of her works reflect her passions for travel and abstract photography. Her newest work in The Feminine Eye reveals her curious nature and talent for observation with both abstract and traditional landscapes. Rabinow divides her time between Houston and Aspen, and has photographs in numerous private and public collections, including the Federal Reserve in Washington, DC. She is on a constant quest to “reflect the beauty, the oddities and the humor that is all around us.”
A self-taught artist, Roseta Santiago began her career as an exhibit and graphic designer. Today the Santa Fe artist is known for her oil paintings of Native Americans and Southwestern culture, especially iconic objects. “I have the same fascination with still life as I do with people,” Santiago says. “I think that beauty is in imperfections, the things that aren’t so perfectly pretty. And if I do the painting with truth — my truth — there’s a person who will relate to that and appreciate it.” In her latest works on view at the Ann Korologos Gallery, Santiago captures the spirit of the West in both figurative works and still lifes.
Dinah K. Worman’s paintings range from representational to imaginative variations of man and his relationship to the landscape. Located in Toas, New Mexico, Worman searches for the “bones” of a landscape, found in the openness of an arid climate or the stacked fields of cultivated land. In her latest work on view in the current exhibition, Worman exhibits recurring subjects including barns, cattle, and crows reminiscent of the Western landscape. She is unusually proficient in both oil and pastel, and has been a featured artist at the Coors Western Art Show and Sale for several years.
