Ann Korologos Gallery presents Magic of the Moment, a wide-ranging selection of Colorado landscapes and other subjects in a variety of styles and sizes, including small works in the technique of Moku Hanga – Japanese woodblock printing, as well as pastels, watercolors and oils. Featured artists include Leon Loughridge, Sabrina Stiles, Sherrie York, Andy Taylor and Brett Scheifflee. The exhibition is on view November 23, 2024 to January 1, 2025 at Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, CO and virtually at korologosgallery.com
“There is a lot of magic that can be found in small moments,” reflects Sue Edmonds, gallery director. “These artists have created work that may be small in scale but command significant presence. What better present is there?”
Leon Loughridge lives in Denver, Colorado, where he creates fine art using the Japanese moku(wood) hanga (print) making technique. Using a baren, Japanese kozo paper from 1900, non-toxic pigments, rice and water, the artist works through multiple blocks and up to 20 colors to create limited edition woodblock prints inspired by the landscapes of Colorado and New Mexico. The contrast in the fluidity of watercolor, which the artist paints en plein air, versus the hard lines of a wood carving is artfully translated by Loughridge.
Andy Taylor has been drawing and painting the scenery within a day’s drive of his Carbondale, Colorado studio for more than fifty years. His sketches are visual reminders of a scene, but are always left incomplete, leaving room within the process to “invent significance and freedom to make discoveries” as he paints.
Brett Scheifflee resides in his home state of New York, returning after living in the Roaring Fork Valley in 2012. More than a decade later, Scheifflee’s tightly painted, highly detailed realist landscape paintings informed by his study of drawing, illustration, and art history have earned him a national reputation. The soft light, simple composition, careful detail, and hyper-realism of Scheifflee’s oil paintings enthrall his collectors.
Sabrina Stiles is a Colorado-based artist with an expressive style that lends itself to her chosen medium of pastel. Primarily a landscape artist, Stiles prefers to work en plein air, and draws inspiration from cloudy days that allow for softer light and dreamlike expressions. Her keen observations and reverence for the beauty in fleeting moments are heralded by many collectors.
Sherrie York is also a Colorado printmaker, painter and draughtswoman based in Maine with an international reputation for lyrical and expressive works on paper. True to her meticulous representations of her observations in the natural world as a trained naturalist, York’s printmaker’s eye is drawn to intricate flora, the interaction of birds with water, and the patterns across land and seascapes.
