Ann Korologos Gallery presents Diana Woods: Dreamscapes, a solo exhibition featuring the narrative and allegorical imagery of Diana Woods that illustrate the parallels between human experience and the natural world. Dreamscapes is on view June 22 through July 1, 2024 at Ann Korologos Gallery in historic downtown Basalt and virtually at korologosgallery.com.
Diana Woods is a painter and sculptor living in Western Colorado, inspired by her surroundings on the border of the Colorado National Monument. Originally from Nebraska, Woods was highly influenced by her childhood memories, “growing up on the back of a horse,” and her grandfather’s tall tales of the Wild West, including Bruno the Bear, the hero of many stories.
Inspired by the Abstract Expressionist movement, Woods’ paintings are filled with layers of texture, luminous color, drips and gestural brushstrokes. Combining abstract elements with realism adds a dimension of contrast between the animals and their dreamlike surroundings. Using various materials such as oils, acrylics, collage, and cold wax, she works quickly on a wood surface, allowing the images to emerge intuitively. In the last decade, Woods has expanded her creative repertoire to include sculpture, utilizing bronze as well as found objects.
The work of Diana Woods reflects the artist’s deep belief in the interconnectedness of all things and the divine spirit in nature. “I have always found my inspiration in the natural world,” reflects Diana Woods. “Animals, especially, come to me in my dreams. When someone views my work, I hope to invite them into a world that inspires a sense of wonder, mystery, and connection to nature.” Animals come to Woods in more than just dreams. For instance, “Pie” the magpie she rescued, was known to sit on her shoulder while she painted, or “Tulip,” a doe who visits Woods, brings her twins to Woods’ garden daily for safe keeping. The results of this artist’s life, filled with wonder and awe, are paintings rich in narrative and allegorical imagery that illustrate the parallels between human experience and the natural world.
