Angus Wilson: Bold Expressions is a solo exhibition featuring Angus Wilson’s bold and colorful still-life and landscape paintings. The works will be on view at Ann Korologos Gallery in historic downtown Basalt from July 22 to August 4, 2019.
Angus Wilson was born and raised in Scotland and has lived in numerous cities throughout Britain. While he has worked as a professional artist for over 24 years, few would say his path to a fine art career was a traditional route. Originally, Angus attended art school, studying photography, film and animation. He worked in television and video as a director, producer, editor and animator, winning international awards for animation, as well as computer entertainment products. After choosing to pursue a career in fine art, Wilson quickly established himself as an artist with a powerful emotional connection to his work, moving to San Francisco in 2007.
Wilson’s work looks simple, fast and evocative, but careful planning is fundamental to his process. When arranging his still lifes, Wilson places elements that he finds to be “sympathetic to each other” in color, size and form. Next, he creates a strong, monochromatic outline on canvas, a signature of his final work. Wilson then develops a color plan, combining pastel, thumbnail sketches and digital layers to realize his color concept, which ultimately defines his series. From his careful outline to his extensive color studies, Wilson’s mixed-media planning allows him to focus on his brushwork and color mixing in the final stage.
Wilson’s work is informed by Cezanne, Matisse, and other post-Impressionist masters, but with his own contemporary twist. According to Wilson, “The idea of being unique, of having a strong vision in my work, and creating work that doesn’t look like anything else — it’s what I’m striving for. I feel happy with my work if I have achieved those goals, because I don’t want to be derivative at the end of the day, in all senses of that word.” His work vibrates with dissonance, emotion, great energy and altered perspectives, resulting in rich harmonious views of still lifes and landscapes. His high-keyed palette and abstracted forms have earned him much acclaim and a dedicated following.
Angus Wilson: Bold Expressions will be complemented by an array of other contemporary Western artists represented by Ann Korologos Gallery, the premier showcase for Western contemporary art in the Roaring Fork Valley.
