When Allison Stewart shared insights of her latest series from the south of France while attending an artist residency, we couldn’t help but smile. Featured in What Lies Beneath, Stewart’s new mixed media works on paper are built upon passages scrawled in graphite in the artist’s script from her studies in French, often excerpts from her diary notes or poems by the French poet Charles Baudelaire and other French Symbolist poets. The words are a way of making the first mark, and are also a basis of the texture she lays upon the surface – something to both cover and reveal beneath layers of rice paper, ink and charcoal.
