About this work
"Hopi Maiden" by Tomas Lasansky depicts a young, unmarried women from the Native American Hopi Tribe. The elaborate "squash blossom" or "butterfly whorls" was done by a maiden's mother who wrapped her daughter's hair around a curved piece of wood to obtain the shape, then removed the wood frame. Only unmarried young women wore this complex hairstyle!
