About this work
"When I began experimenting with color, I began a series called Underfoot. I didn’t know it was going to be a series when I made the first print but two critical things happened while I was out looking at birds and hanging out with biologists. Number one: distracted by unfamiliar birdsong, I failed to noticed a broken slat in a bridge, over an irrigation ditch and I stepped through it. Number two: at a field research station a colleague said, “Hey look, red-bellied woodpecker.” I looked up, fell down, and broke my elbow. I can’t say these events directly inspired this series because of course it was self preservation rather than aesthetics that encouraged me to do a better job of watching where I was going. But looking down I discovered that I loved the intricate textures in the landscape at my feet."
