Western contemporary artist Leon Loughridge's process begins with plein air watercolor sketches that capture the essence and inspiration of a scene - what grabbed his attention. He sets a spotlight where he wants to focus and allows the shapes and values in the scene to compliment the focal point. Leon often enlarges and combines watercolor sketches to compose designs for wood-block prints. He uses the Reduction Process, printing and carving a single block of wood numerous times. He carves out the whites with general strokes. The block is then inked with a rice-paste ink using brushes. The paper is registered to the block, laid over the inked surface and the ink transferred by pressure. The block is carved and printed multiple times, printing a progressively darker color for each color run. Most prints have between 14 and 18 colors, a process which takes about two months per print.
